Holding back makes you block, and a well-timed block results in a Just Defend. You can also spot-dodge/sidestep attacks much like you do in Super Smash Bros., giving you a brief window of invulnerability without sacrificing your position. Double tapping towards your opponent makes your character run, while double tapping away results in a defensive back hop with a few frames of invincibility. You move forward or backward with the analog stick. You have four main button attacks: light, medium, and heavy slashes, and kick. There are a handful of key mechanics that the game employs, but those few techniques are crucial to your success. If you're at all familiar with footsies in fighting games, this should sound familiar to you: Samurai Shodown is all about footsies. You want to carefully space your opponent, land a blow or punish a miss, then move back to neutral to ready another attack, or bait an opponent's attack.

Unlike Dragon Ball FighterZ, which has lots of mix-up attacks, pressure, and high-flying juggle combos, or Street Fighter V, which has rush-down and combo-oriented play, Samurai Shodown keeps its combat simple, yet effective. Fights can be fast depending on the chosen characters, but for the most part, matches play out deliberately and cautiously. In terms of gameplay, Samurai Shodown retains the older games' pacing, in that matches are methodical affairs, rather than hectic combo blenders. SNK has a $19.99 DLC season pass in store, as well, which will add four classic characters over the course of several months. That total is on the small side when you compare SamSho's roster to Samurai Shodown V Special's 28-combatant line up. 16 characters are available at launch, 13 of which are returning fighters from previous games, and three who are brand new to the series.

Samurai Shodown is available for PS4 and Xbox One now, and will hit the Nintendo Switch and PC platforms later this year (and Google Stadia at some undisclosed time). Amazingly, this new Samurai Shodown is one of the most refreshing fighting games to come along in some time.

Yet, despite no new series entries in more than a decade, developer SNK rebooted Samurai Shodown, preserving many of the classic gameplay mechanics that made the original games so memorable. Still, it was a tough fighting game for some people to pick up due to the methodical combat and shocking damage scaling characters hit brutally hard, so a few simple mistakes could cost you the match and your quarter. The original Samurai Shodown found an audience back in the 1990s thanks to its unique weapon-based bouts, feudal Japanese setting, and bloody flourishes.
